Madrid, NM is a hidden gem

Today we stumbled onto the hidden gem of Madrid, NM (MAD-rid to the locals). It's a ghost town steeped in history with no cell signal and plenty of haunted stories. The Mine Shaft Tavern embodies the colorful history of Madrid as well as the free spirit of the 300 residents. We had locally sourced buffalo burgers...wow. The Tavern holds the title of best Green Chile Cheeseburger in NM as well as the longest standing bar in the state. They also source wagyu from a ranch a few miles away in Golden. There is a haunted train behind the Tavern and many locals swear they hear children playing in the area. The rest of the town boasts many art galleries, local Navajo and Zuni jewelry and crafts, and "alternative health" shops. Overall, a great little self-proclaimed hippie community worth a stop.
