The best things come in threes. Primary colors, the Stooges, Bob Marley's birds, the blind mice, the Musketeers, and even Barnum & Bailey. They say three's a crowd, but four just makes everything awkward. When we started our travels, we decided to create just three simple rules to follow wherever we stopped.
Visit a local historical or educational place - We try to find a museum, art gallery, or historical marker to learn more about the area.
Find local cuisine - We find a locally owned restaurant or hole in the wall and try their specialty.
Find something weird - We look for out of the ordinary stops; some locally famous place full of folklore or an odd landmark. Ask the locals, they always have great stories and can point you to a haunted train or the largest ball of yarn.
We've stumbled across some great spots...the tombs of the Gypsy King and Queen, "haunted" restaurants in central New Mexico, authentic old West towns, and some of the best local food on the planet. It's a lot of fun and you learn so much about the places you visit. We try to get lost at least once (with GPS of course) and pick up small mementoes of our visits off the beaten path. We wander. That's part of the fun of living the RV lifestyle.
I always followed Anthony Bourdain's travels. He was the consummate wanderer with an adventurous spirit and a "no apologies" way of living. He also offered the best advice on life.
“Eat at a local restaurant tonight. Get the cream sauce. Have a cold pint at 4 o’clock in a mostly empty bar. Go somewhere you’ve never been. Listen to someone you think may have nothing in common with you. Order the steak rare. Eat an oyster. Have a negroni. Have two. Be open to a world where you may not understand or agree with the person next to you, but have a drink with them anyways. Eat slowly. Tip your server. Check in on your friends. Check in on yourself. Enjoy the ride.” – Anthony Bourdain
So we eat local, go places we wouldn't normally go, eat the cream sauce, follow our rule of three, and enjoy the ride. Thanks, Anthony. You are missed, but know your spirit is alive and well with those of us who still wander. No apologies.
Ya know... you are making it hard for me to resist joining your adventures. I'm not sure when but I know that I have decided there is no "if". I will join you soon... 😉 😊 😘
